Hearing Loss Is A Common Problem, Here’s The Solution!

People say silence is golden, but when you live in a world of continuous silence because you have trouble hearing it can be frustrating or isolating. Hearing loss is a serious condition impacting millions of people every year. Let’s learn a little more about some of the different types of hearing loss, treatment options and things that might cause to minimise hearing loss in the future.

Conductive Hearing Loss

Ears are an intricate and elaborate system of canals, drums and bones. When one of these parts is malformed or damaged, it can cause conductive hearing loss. Some of the things that may cause this type of hearing loss include outer, middle or ear canal structural malformation; frequent ear infections that cause fluid build-up; tumours; earwax build-up; allergic reactions; eardrum perforation etc.

Treatment: There are several treatment options available for this type of hearing loss. If it’s a malformation, it may require surgical intervention and correction.

At Battlefords Hearing Centers, patients having conductive hearing loss are referred to an otolaryngologist for further diagnostic testing before discussing amplification. The staffs at Battlefords Hearing Centers are certified in Advanced Cerumen Management and offer several methods of ear wax removal like Q-tip; Curette-Forceps; Lavage/Irrigation and Vacuum procedures.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural Hearing Loss or SNHL is nerve related damage in the inner ear. The most common causes for this problem are repeated exposure to loud noises, head trauma or diseases that damage the nerves in your ear. This type of hearing loss can also be hereditary or could be the result of aging.

Treatment: For many, this type of hearing loss can be minimized entirely by wearing hearing protection (such as ear plugs or ear coverings) any time you are exposed to loud noises. Some options include treatment with corticosteroids to reduce swelling and inflammation in the cochlea hair cells, emergency surgery in cases of trauma, long term drug therapies, surgery to remove tumors and hearing aids.

However the most effective and safest mode of curing this type of hearing loss is the use of hearing aids. At Battlefords, you can get a worry-free hearing care package accustomed as per your needs.

Mixed Hearing Loss

Sometimes hearing loss is the result of both Conductive and SNHL, means that there is structural damage to the outer or middle ear and damage to the auditory nerve. An audiologist can help you determine if this is the case for you, and may recommend addressing the conductive hearing loss first, then figuring out the best way to treat the hearing loss.

Treatment: Before getting any hearing treatment, it’s best to consult a medical professional who can properly diagnose your hearing loss and determine whether you need surgery, medication therapy, hearing aids, or some other option.

It is important to note that over time, reduced stimulation to your ears and brain can actually impair the brain’s ability to process sound and recognise speech. The more speech recognition deteriorates, the more difficult it is to recover. The sooner you take action, the sooner you put a stop to the negative effects of hearing loss, and the sooner you begin to regain sharpness, confidence and control.

So don’t wait. Early hearing loss treatment is proven to be more effective.
